“Whatever the job is, we can do it,” boasted James Amos, 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps. What Amos did not say is that sometimes the military needs help doing the “whatever.” When that is the case, they can call companies like IAP Worldwide, a government support services company headquartered in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The company began in 1953 as Pan Am World Services and provided construction and operations services for the nation’s first space center. It specialized in managing airport operations and later expanded into support services for other installations. One of its largest contracts was a 1986 agreement for support services for the Los Alamos National Laboratory for five years for $1 billion. In 1989 Johnson Controls purchased Pan Am, which expanded the company’s services. IAP’s purchased two divisions from DRS in November 2015. Aviation and Logistics, based in Oklahoma, is an aircraft repair and management company and Tactical Communications and Network Solutions is a information-technology business. With these additions, IAP Worldwide now provides support services in five areas–government services, infrastructure, aviation engineering, power production and IT/communications.
The company’s motto summarizes its wide range of services– “We specialize in making the impossible possible.” With its diverse subsidiaries, IAP Worldwide Services offers complete support services for government agencies operating in the most remote areas. For example, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers chose IAP in 2010 as supplier of permanent reliable power for its Forward Operating Base Camp Dwyer in the Helmland province in Afghanistan. This province is a very remote and hostile area, with a strong Taliban presence, and lacking adequate infrastructure. There is no rail service in the region and 33% of the roads are impassible. Yet, these are the types of conditions IAP is able to handle.
IAP Worldwide Services’ global reputation has made it a trusted support service provider inside the continental United States. The company has contracts ranging from support services for MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida to facilities maintenance operations at NASA’s Ames Research Facility in Moffett, California. IAP is even the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers chosen supplier of bottled water, ice and mobile power during natural disasters.
“There is nothing impossible to him who will try, ” said Alexander the Great. Doubtlessly, IAP proves the truth of the famous general’s words.
